San Juan Drive Residential Fire

Dec 17th, 2019

MOBILE, Ala. – On December 17th, at approximately 12:33 hours, Mobile Fire-Rescue Department personnel were dispatched to the 3900 block of San Juan Drive. Engine crews were initially dispatched to the area for reports of a downed powerline, arcing at a residence in the area. Additional information provided by civilian callers revealed that the scene was upgraded to a legitimate residential fire. A full response of fire companies was immediately dispatched to the scene.

Upon arrival on scene, crews discovered a single-story, residential structure presenting with smoke visible from the windows and an active powerline down near the home. Alabama Power was requested to the scene to assist with disconnecting power to the residence. Firefighters successfully made entry into the structure to begin their initial fire attack.

A single occupant was in the home at the time of the incident, but he was able to safely evacuate the structure after a blaring smoke alarm awakened him, alerting of the impending danger. While fire suppression teams continued to battle flames inside of the home, Alabama Power arrived on scene to fully disconnect the electricity to the building; thus, removing the threat of the power line in the front yard.

All signs of fire were adequately extinguished, and toxic smoke was horizontally ventilated from the structure. No injuries were sustained during the incident. The home suffered significant flame, water, and smoke damage. Fire Investigators reviewed the scene and collected data from civilians in the area. The cause of the incident remains undetermined.
