The Mobile Fire-Rescue Department (MFRD) proudly announces Fire Service Captain Jackson Norton as the September 2022 Firefighter of the Month. Captain Norton began his career with MFRD in October of 1994, later promoting to the rank of Driver in 2000 and Captain in 2012.
Captain Norton is currently assigned to MFRD’s Hazardous Materials Unit, serving all of Alabama’s southern region. Captain Norton has consistently presented stable leadership as a member of the Mobile Fire-Rescue Department, and he continues to provide guidance and knowledge a HazMat Technician.
Norton was proactive in leading a project to research equipment and purchase new air monitors for the Department’s Hazardous Materials response team. Air monitoring is used to detect and monitor airborne contaminants, essentially safeguarding first responders and civilians from life-threatening exposures. Following months of painstaking research to find adequate air monitors, Captain Norton organized a new concept in testing in network-centric detectors.
Through a previously-unknown grant program, Captain Norton submitted an application for approval, resulting in a $96,625.00 Federal award to ensure the safety of our citizens.
