The Mobile Fire-Rescue Department has named Fire Service Driver Phillip Igo as the Firefighter of the Month for April 2021. Beginning his career in fire service in 2007, Driver Igo promoted to Driver in 2016 and is currently assigned to the Melton Fire Station in mid-town Mobile.
On Tuesday, April 20 2021, at approximately 8:30 pm, Engine 8 was retrieving personnel from Mobile Infirmary Medical Center following an emergency medical response. The lone person on E8 was Driver Phillip Igo. While on route to the hospital, Driver Igo happened upon a pick-up truck on fire. He quickly pulled the engine into a parking lot behind medical offices on Springhill Avenue and called for another engine to respond. In the couple of minutes that it took for Engine 3 to arrive on scene, Driver Igo had pulled a preconnected hose line, engaged the engine's pump gear, and had the engine compartment fire fully extinguished.
While car fires are an every day occurrence for members of the Mobile Fire-Rescue Department, under normal circumstances there are at least three crew members responding. Driver Igo was a literal one-man crew, who showed initiative, and got the job done!
MFRD proudly recognizes Driver Phillip Igo as the Firefighter of the Month for April 2021.
