Mar 19th, 2007

March 19, 2007 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (SH2007-22) FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION R. Steve Huffman Public Information Officer (251) 208-2857/Fax: (251) 208-2861 E-Mail: huffman@cityofmobile.org ONE INJURED IN APARTMERNT FIRE A 21-year-old female was injured in an apartment fire Monday morning, March 19, 2007 at the Colony Park Apartments located at 1 Country Lane off Foreman Road. The original called received at approximately 8:06 a.m. stated that two people had jumped from an upstairs apartment and were possibly injured. Which turned out not to be the case later in the investigation. Mobile firefighters arrived at approximately 8:12 a.m. and reported heavy flames coming from a downstairs apartment. Firemedics found the female victim who had cuts to her left arm; she was treated on the scene and transported to Providence Hospital for further treatment. Mobile Fire Investigators spoke to the victim at the hospital and she told them she was asleep in her bedroom with her two-year-old son, when something alerted her to smoke. She got up to see where it was coming from and discovered fire in the living room of the apartment. She was unable to escape through the front door so she ran back to her bedroom. The bed was in front of the window so she had to jump out the window over the headboard. Her son apparently received no injuries. The fire appears to have originated in the living room of the downstairs apartment, number 115. There was some extension to apartment 116 above due to the fire coming out of the downstairs apartment window and climbing up the outside wall. The cause is under investigation. No damage estimate is available at this time. No other injuries were reported. Engines 1, 22, 29, truck 5, rescue 1 and Acting District 3 Chief, Captain Charlie Carpenter responded to the fire. ###
