Near Drowning at Vista Bonita Drive

Steve Huffman Public Information Officer (251) 208-2857/Fax: (251) 208-2861 E-Mail: huffman@cityofmobile.org NEAR DROWNING AT VISTA BONITA DRIVE Two teenaged girls were playing in a culvert when they were swept away by a strong current in approximately two feet of water today, Sunday, May 16. The incident occurred behind Knollwood Apartments on Vista Bonita Drive, South at Wildwood Place. One of the girls, a 14-year-old, was able to get out of the culvert on her own but her 13-year-old friend was not as fortunate. Mobile Fire-Rescue was notified at approximately 1:30 p.m. The departments Swift Water Rescue Team was dispatched but were canceled after first arriving Firefighters were able to locate the 13-year-old victim within seconds of arriving on the scene. She was found at Wildwood and Fairfield. Firefighters pulled her from the water and immediately began C.P.R. and Firemedics transported her to Infirmary West Hospital where she was listed in critical condition. ###
