MOBILE FIREFIGHTERS GETTING A NEW LOOK
For the first time in thirty-two years Mobile Firefighters will get a new look and new uniforms. Nothing unusual about new uniforms, firefighters typically get new ones once a year but the new uniforms will have a different color scheme. The uniforms will change from the present all navy uniform to a khaki colored top shirt and navy colored pants. The department is also changing brands to the popular 5.11 Tactical Series Brand worn by firefighters and police officers nationwide. The uniforms are 100% cotton and meet National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standards. Chief Officers will still wear the traditional white shirt and navy pants.
The new uniforms are due to arrive today, Friday, February 9, 2007 and will be issued to department members beginning Monday, February 12 through Wednesday, February 14, 2007.
For many years Mobile Fire-Rescue Department wore an all khaki uniform without any insignias until May of 1975 when the department changed to the all Navy uniform and a uniform insignia (patch) was designed by retired firefighter/driver Joe Hannah. The new style uniforms cost the same as the old style at approximately $75 thousand.
