Sep 30th, 2023

Mobile Fire-Rescue Department firefighters work to stop a three-alarm commercial building fire in a strip mall in the 5600 block of Old Shell Road Saturday night, September 30, 2023.

Mobile Fire-Rescue Department units were dispatched for a report of a commercial building fire at 5636 Old Shell Road in Mobile, Alabama, at about 7:48 Saturday night, September 30, 2023. When crews arrived on scene within 4 minutes they reported heavy smoke showing and began to deploy hose lines for a quick fire attack.

With worsening fire conditions in the large, strip-mall structure, incident command called for a second alarm response at 8 p.m.

Two ladder trucks were set up to flow water as flames leaped from the roof above Jaguar Cleaners & Laundromat as dozens of onlookers watched from nearby.

Crews continued to work on the scene, trying to get access to the fire, which appeared to be burning in the attic space. Command called for a third alarm response at 8:22 p.m.

At about 8:38 p.m., a firefighter was transported by paramedics to a local hospital after he was injured when he fell from the edge of the roof.

Crews made access to the fire through the roof and were able to successfully stop the flames.

Incident command declared the fire was out at 9:46 p.m., but stated crews would remain on scene for some time to mop up hot spots. The fire remains under investigation at this time.
