May Firefighter of the Month

Jun 6th, 2007

June 6, 2007 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (SH2007-34) FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION R. Steve Huffman Public Information Officer (251) 208-2857/Fax: (251) 208-2861 E-Mail: huffman@cityofmobile.org MAY FIREFIGHTER OF THE MONTH On April 17, 2007 Firefighters and Firemedics were called to the scene of an accident inside a cargo ship located on Deer River Road. In route to the call they were told that a male subject with unknown injuries was approximately 40-50 feet down inside the hole a ship. He became injured when he was struck by a load of frozen chickens that had fallen off a pallet that was being lowered into the storage hold of a refrigeration ship. Firemedic Barry Glisson 32, a 3 year veteran of the department was one of the first to arrive and made his way down to the bottom of the ship to begin treating the patient. Recognizing there was an incident that required the assistance of technical rescue, Glisson made the call. While firefighters prepared the patient for removal of the ship, Glisson attended to the medical needs of the patient, which did not appear to be life threatening. The patient was eventually removed and taken by life flight to a local hospital for further treatment. There were many involved in this incident but Glisson exemplified a model employee. He showed the leadership skills and abilities to make this rescue a success. Glisson has also excellent work ethics. He has attended several technical rescue classes that are associated with US&R (Urban, Search and Rescue) as well as his continuing education for his paramedic license. Although he is a relatively new employee his adaptation to this job is to be commended. Because of this Glisson has been nominated and awarded the May Firefighter of the Month Award. The Pleasant Valley Opportunity Club who sponsors the monthly event honored Barry Glisson at a breakfast on Wednesday, June 6, 2007 at the Tiny Diny Restaurant. ###
