March Firefighter of the Month

Mar 23rd, 2011

March 23, 2011 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (SH2011-32) FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION R. Steve Huffman Public Information Officer (251) 208-2857/Fax: (251) 208-2861 E-Mail: huffman@cityofmobile.org MARCH FIREFIGHTER OF THE MONTH On Tuesday, December 21, an elderly man with Parkinsonism was leaving his Dentist’s office after receiving some minor dental treatment. While walking to his car with his daughter he tripped and fell face first into the concrete curb. By the time his Dentist got to him he was bleeding profusely from a gash under his left eye. As the Dentist was administering first aid a car passing his office stopped and the driver got out and asked if they could be of any assistance. According to the Dentist “God sent an off duty fireman or firewoman to help in this traumatic situation”. Captain Lane Spruill, an eleven year veteran of the department, took control of managing the patient while the fire truck and ambulance were in route. According to the Dentist, “Spruill carefully and gently treated the victim with professionalism and confidence. Her reassurance to those of us who were very concerned for our friend was extremely comforting. I've not had the opportunity to work so closely 'with one of our expertly trained firemen until that moment. I was very impressed”. The Dentist commended Spruill for her compassion and expertise but what really impressed him was her willingness to help her fellow man when she was not obligated to do so. “She didn’t have to stop and help but she did, she was looking for the opportunity to be of service. If all of our Mobile County firefighters are as loving and thoughtful as Lane, we are a truly a blessed community. She represented her profession and colleagues with honor”. The patient was treated at a local hospital and after a night of observation was allowed to go home - battered, stitched up and bruised but he's going to be just fine. “Sincere gratitude goes to our Lane and all our fine firefighters. Keep up the great work - I appreciate the job you are doing.” Spruill will be presented the March Firefighter of the Month award this morning, Wednesday, March 23 by the Pleasant Valley Opportunity Club, who sponsors the program. ###
