Feb 14th, 2014

February 14, 2014 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (SH2014-06) FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION R. Steve Huffman Public Information Officer (251) 208-2857/Fax: (251) 208-2861 E-Mail: huffman@cityofmobile.org JET FUSELAGE TO BE MOVED TO FIRE-RESCUE TRAINING ACADEMY Don’t be alarmed if you see an approximately 300 ft Boeing 737 Jet fuselage traveling in the area of Broad St in south Mobile. On Monday, February 17 G.A. West will be moving the fuselage from Brookley Field a.k.a the Mobile Downtown Airport to the Mobile Fire-Rescue Training Academy located at 860 Owens Street. The move is scheduled to begin at approximately 10 a.m. and is scheduled to arrive at the academy at noon. Once at the academy it will be used as a specialized training aide for Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) firefighters to supplement existing training curriculum required by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The ultimate goal is to develop and establish an FAA approved training site in Mobile. The facility would be the only one of its kind in the State of Alabama. Currently ARFF Firefighters have to get their training in Mississippi. Other potential training for the fuselage is emergency medical training, confined space, as well as, for other agencies such as the Mobile Police Department’s tactical response team. The aircraft was donated by CAVU Aerospace. The acquisition of the aircraft was made possible through a cooperative effort between the Mobile Airport Authority and Mobile Fire-Rescue Department. G.A. West has volunteered its services to move it to the MFRD Facility. MAE, Alabama Power, Comcast, AT&T and several city departments have also contributed to make this happen. Mobile Firefighters who are part of the Technical Rescue Team on the second shift at Melton Fire Station have performed approximately 90% of the dismantling of the aircraft. ###
