Feb 6th, 2007

February 6, 2007 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (SH2007-05) FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION R. Steve Huffman Public Information Officer (251) 208-2857/Fax: (251) 208-2861 E-Mail: huffman@cityofmobile.org HOUSE FIRE 1704 UNION STREET Mobile firefighters responded to a report of a house fire located at 1702 Union Street on Tuesday morning, February 6, 2007. The call was received from a neighbor at approximately 6:56 a.m. and firefighters arrived on the scene at approximately 7:02 a.m. and reported heavy smoke and flames visible from the rear of the one-story, wood frame structure. Firefighters made entry and discovered the fire in a back bedroom and made quick work of extinguishing the fire. Kendrick Demon Bush, the occupant, told Mobile Fire Investigators that he had left the residence at approximately 5:00 a.m. to go to work. He was called later by a neighbor that his house was on fire and arrived shortly after. Apparently the neighbor kicked in a door and using garden hose attempted to extinguish the fire. The fire appears to have been accidental and caused when wiring from a television left on 24-hours heated up under some clothing and shoes thus causing the fire. The fire was confined to the bedroom with heavy heat damage to the hallway and adjacent bedroom. The remainder of the house received smoke damage. Damage is estimated at approximately $10 thousand. No injuries were reported. Engines 12, 14, 18, truck 10, rescue 14 and District 3 Chief Frank Byrd responded to the fire. ###
