At approximately 1:02 PM, Mobile Fire-Rescue Department crews were dispatched to 162 Hemley Avenue for reports of a vacant residence on fire in the area. Upon arrival on scene, fire personnel (Engine 12) described a single-story, wood-framed structure with flames and thick, black smoke billowing from the rear.
Fire scene operations were immediately established, as suppression crews entered the home to begin their initial fire attack.
Additional personnel were dispatched to the scene (1:22 PM) to assist with on scene operations.
Search and rescue crews swept through the home to confirm that no civilians were trapped inside.
After roughly 21 minutes, all signs of flames had been successfully extinguished without any reported injuries to firefighters.
Approximately ¼ of the house was destroyed as a result of flame, smoke, and water destruction, resulting in an estimated $15,000 in damages.
Investigators surveyed the scene and determined the fire had been set intentionally. Through the course of the investigation, thirty-six year old Safiya Starkey (DOB 11/27/1984) was identified as the main suspect responsible for the referenced incident. Starkey was arrested and charged Arson 2nd.
