Fuel Spill on I-65 and Dauphin Street

7:34 a.m. — Mobile Fire-Rescue Department units, including Hazmat 15, were dispatched at about 6:46 a.m. for a report of a fuel spill on northbound I-65 south of Dauphin Street.

Engine 23 arrived on scene to find a flatbed 18-wheeler with a load of sod that was leaking fuel from its 150-gallon fuel tanks and its smaller 25-gallon diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) tank after striking a piece of metal in the road. The crew used a putty material to slow the leak.

When Hazmat 15 arrived, a baby pool was used to catch any remaining fuel still dripping out and a small dike was established on the downhill side of the road to ensure no flow of fuel or DEF went into the ditch.

The crews from MFRD will remain on scene, awaiting response to the scene from city environmental and ALDOT.
