Aug 10th, 2000

August 10, 2000 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (SH100051) FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION R. Steve Huffman Public Information Officer (334) 208-5806/Fax: (334) 208-5813 E-Mail: huffman@ci.mobile.al.us FIRE DAMAGES WAREHOUSE IN WEST MOBILE An ABC Enforcement Officer saw flames and smoke coming from the J.W. Cabinets and Supply, Inc. Wednesday night, August 9, 2000 and immediately called 911 to report the blaze. The call was received at approximately 9:27 p.m. reporting the fire located at 8035 Tanner Williams Road. Mobile Firefighters arrived at 9:31 p.m. and called for a Second Alarm assignment at approximately 9:39 p.m. but had the fire under control within a few minutes afterwards before second alarm units arrived on the scene. The owner of the business, James White, told Mobile Fire-Rescue Investigators that he had finished working on some cabinets in the paint room around 5:00 p.m. and shut everything down and locked up for the day. The fire appears to have originated in the paint room, which is located on the north West End of the large metal warehouse. Quick work by firefighters using aerial ladders and large "deck guns" on fire engines they were able to contain the main body of fire in the paint room. There was some and heat extension immediately outside the paint room. Because the roof was collapsing firefighters were kept on the outside of the building on the northwest end. The cause of the fire that caused an estimated $250 thousand in damage is still being investigated. The building appeared to be secure prior to firefighters arrival. No injuries were reported. Engines 1, 18, 22, truck 5, rescue 1 and District 3 Chief John D. Young responded. Engines 6, 15, truck 10, rescue 18 and District 4 Chief Bill Glisson responded on the second alarm. ###
