February Firefighter of the Month

Feb 23rd, 2006

February 23, 2006 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (SH2006-13) FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION R. Steve Huffman Public Information Officer (251) 208-5806/Fax: (251) 208-5813 E-Mail: huffman@cityofmobile.org FEBRUARY FIREFIGHTER OF THE MONTH On the morning of February 9, 2006 firefighters were dispatched to a wreck on Highway 90 involving two vehicles and one possibly trapped inside. One of the firemedics on the scene was attempting to open a door with a pry bar to free the trapped victim and noticed firefighter Mark Knox standing behind him pulling with him. They finally got the door open, packaged the patient and helped load the patient onto Lifeflight air ambulance for transport. After all was said and done it was discovered that firefighter Knox was actually on his way home and stopped prior to any emergency vehicles arriving to assist. He was off duty and certainly not obligated to stop and assist but he is a shinning example of the caliber of people working at the Mobile Fire-Rescue Department. It was noted that he was very professional and efficient on a very chaotic scene. Because of this Firefighter Mark E. Knox, 38, a 12 year veteran, has been nominated as February's Firefighter of the Month. The Pleasant Valley Opportunity Club (formally the Optimist Club) who sponsors the monthly event, recognized Firefighter Mark Knox at a breakfast on Wednesday, February 22, 2006 at the Tiny Diny Restaurant. A picture of Knox can be found along with this release on the department's website. ###
