MOBILE, Ala. – At approximately 06:24 hours, Mobile Fire-Rescue Department companies were dispatched to Edgewood Villas at 1601 Neshota Drive. Callers reported smoke flowing from a unit on the complex. Upon arrival on scene, MFRD crews confirmed light smoke visible from a single-story, apartment-style structure.
Teams quickly entered the primary apartment unit to a smoke-filled living space. Crews discovered a pot of grease left cooking unattended on the stove, with contents from an overhead cabinet atop the stove, essentially smothering the grease fire.
While searching the home for occupants, Mobile Fire-Rescue personnel discovered an individual unconscious in a room adjacent to the kitchen. The occupant was quickly removed from the hazardous scene to an area outside of the apartment. After a detailed assessment, MFRD paramedics noted that the patient presented obvious signs of death and was determined to have been deceased at the scene.
No fire personnel were injured during the incident. Approximately 3 apartment units were ventilated of smoke in the homes. Mobile Fire-Rescue Department Investigators determined the cause of the fire to be accidental.
