Construction Worker Killed in Accident

Steve Huffman Public Information Officer (251) 208-5806/Fax: (251) 208-5813 E-Mail: huffman@cityofmobile.org CONSTRUCTION WORKER KILLED IN ACCIDENT Mobile Fire-Rescue Firefighters, Firemedics and Technical Rescue Team responded to an accident at the construction site at Springhill College located at 100 College Lane on Thursday, November 30, 2006 that claimed the life of a 25-year-old construction worker. The call was received at approximately 11:57 a.m. and firefighters arrived at approximately 12:04 p.m. to discover the worker, who was apparently in cardiac arrest, located on the 3rd floor of the building. According to information obtained on the scene the accident occurred when an approximately 10 foot high, 8 foot wide and 4 inch thick concrete wall fell on the worker. The concrete wall had been removed prior to the arrival of firefighters. Because of where the patient was located on the 3rd floor and no stairs to remove him Mobile Fire-Rescue Department Technical Rescue Team was called in to assist with removing him from the building. Firemedics provided treatment on the scene while team members assisted with preparing the patient for removal. Ladder Truck 10 located on Moffat Road was used to lower the patient and Firemedics to the ground. Firemedics loaded him in the rescue unit and transported him to the University of South Alabama Medical Center where he was pronounced dead by the medical staff there. The cause of the accident is not known. No other injuries were reported. Mobile Fire-Rescue does not release names of victims due to HIPAA regulations. Engine 15, Truck 10, Rescue 3, Technical Rescue 25 and Squad 26 and District 3 Chief John D. Young responded to the call. ###
