956 DUVALL STREET FIRE REMAINS UNDER INVESTIGATION
Mobile Firefighters responded to a fire in the attic of a one-story, wood frame house, located at 956 Duvall Street today Friday, August 4, 2000. The call was received at approximately 11:44 a.m. and first units arrived at approximately 11:50 a.m. and reported heavy smoke and fire coming from the structure. Gary Harris, 29, told Mobile Fire Investigators he was on the West side of the house washing his car when he saw smoke coming out of top vent on the roof of the structure. He then ran inside and notified Zack Irby, Sharon Harris and Mokita Harris to get out that the house was on fire. They were in the den at the rear of the house and had not been aware that the house was on fire. All escaped unharmed. Gary Harris then attempted to put the fire out with a garden hose by spraying water on the roof. The fire appears to have originated in the attic over the kitchen and den and extended through the roof. The kitchen below was damaged from drop down from the ceiling above. The cause of the fire that caused an estimated $45 thousand in damage is still under investigation. No injuries were reported. The house is owned by Rosetta and Franklin Harris. Engines 3, 11, 16, truck 24, rescue 24 and District 1 Chief Ed Salva responded.
