ACCIDENTAL FIRE CAUSES DAMAGE TO HOUSE
Mobile firefighters responded to a report of a house fire located at 108 Herndon Avenue on Thursday morning, May 18, 2000. The call from the one-story wood frame residence was received at approximately 7:38 a.m. and first fire-rescue units arrived at approximately 7:41 a.m. Both occupants, Willie Mae Simmons, 68 and Penny Simmons, 35, escaped without apparent injury. The fire originated in the living room and firefighters were able to extinguish it and keep it confined at the point of origin without further spread. Simmons told Fire Investigators the window air conditioner fell out of the window earlier in the week and had been placed back in the window. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Damage is estimated at $6,500.00. No injuries were reported. Engines 3, 8, 14, truck 4, rescue 3 and District 1 Chief John D. Young responded.
