Lightning Causes House Fire

Steve Huffman Public Information Officer (251) 208-5806/Fax: (251) 208-5813 E-Mail: huffman@cityofmobile.org LIGHTNING CAUSES HOUSE FIRE Mobile Firefighters responded to a house fire located at 5900 Cansler Drive, early Thursday morning, February 2, 2006. The fire was reported at approximately 5:13 a.m. and firefighters arrived at approximately 5:19 a.m. reporting smoke coming from the one-story, wood frame, brick exterior constructed residence. Firefighters entered the structure and encountered heavy smoke conditions from approximately 5 ft from the floor upward. Upon further investigation they discovered the fire was in the attic area above and had broken through the roof. The owners, Vernell and Karen Abreo, discovered the fire and called 911 escaping without apparent injuries. The fire was contained to the attic/roof area with smoke damage to the living area below. Heavy thunderstorms had passed through the area prior to the discovery of the fire and Mobile Fire Investigators found evidence the fire was caused by a lightning strike. Damage is estimated at $65 thousand. Engines 6, 19, 22, truck 5, rescue 6 and District Chief Bill Glisson responded to the fire. ###
