JUNE FIREFIGHTER OF THE MONTH
Deputy Chief Charlie Parmar, 59, has been selected as the Mobile Fire-Rescue Department's June Firefighter of the Month. On Wednesday, May 3, 2006 Parmar was travelling on Rangeline Road in route to work when he noticed a large orange glow near Higgins Road, having not heard a dispatch to any calls Parmar went to investigate. Upon arrival he discovered heavy fire showing from two sides of a manufactured home (trailer). He called it into fire alarm and advised there was a trailer fully involved and to start units responding. Two of the occupants advised him that the daughter of one of them was unaccounted for and may still be inside the burning trailer. Parmar wen around to the other side of the trailer and made entry through the back door and searched the back bedroom and hallway of the structure as best he could. As the fire began to spread in his direction he exited the structure at which time the occupants advised the daughter had been located outside. Parmar checked the daughter and found no burns but she was having problems due to a preexisting heart condition at which time he called the responding rescue unit to come to the scene to do a more thorough examination. After units began to arrive, Parmar gave a situation report, turned command over to the responding District Chief and left the scene continuing to work.
For his actions Deputy Chief Charlie Parmar received the Firefighter of the Month award from the Pleasant Valley Opportunity Club. Parmar has been with the department for over 37 years.
