House Fire; Woodcliff Drive, West

Steve Huffman Public Information Officer (251) 208-2857/Fax: (251) 208-2861 E-Mail: huffman@cityofmobile.org HOUSE FIRE; WOODCLIFF DRIVE, WEST Mobile Fire-Rescue responded to the report of a vacant house on fire located at Woodcliff, Drive, West Thursday morning, July 17. The fire was reported at approximately 8 a.m. and when firefighters arrived on the scene they reported heavy smoke showing from a two-story wood frame with brick veneer structure. Neighbors told firefighters and fire investigators that the house was vacant and had been for approximately three months. When firefighters entered the structure they discovered the fire had burned out the interior stairwell and had to place a ladder to the second level to gain access and extinguish the fire. The fire appears to have originated under the stairs on the first floor and spread to the second floor and attic. Fire investigators found no furnishings in the structure, only boxes and bags and the power was still active. The cause of the fire is under investigation at this time. Damage is estimated at approximately $20 thousand and no injuries were reported. Engines 6, 19, 22; truck 5; rescue 6 and Captain Don Dobbs responded to the fire. The Bureau of Fire Prevention is conducting the investigation. ###
