August 25, 2008 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (SH2008-64) FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION R. Steve Huffman Public Information Officer (251) 208-2857/Fax: (251) 208-2861 E-Mail: huffman@cityofmobile.org HOUSE FIRE CLAIMS LIFE Mobile Fire Investigators are working to determine the cause of a house fire located at 2903 Frederick Street, which claimed the life of a Mobile man and injured another. Mobile Fire-Rescue Department Dispatchers received the 911 call at approximately 10:20 p.m. Sunday evening, August 24. Firefighters, from Engine 15 on Moffett Road, arrived shortly after at approximately 10:24 p.m. reporting heavy fire showing from the front and side of the single story, wood frame structure. As Engine 15’s crew extinguished the fire, Truck 10’s Crew started a search for possible victims and discovered an approximately 31-year-old male deceased in what appears to be a utility room. Firemedics assigned to Rescue 14 treated an approximately 36-year-old male located in the street at the front of the house who received what appeared to be a 2nd degree burn to the right arm and minor laceration and abrasions on the left arm. He stated to firemedics he was attempting to get into the door of the burning structure to help his friend get out of the house. He advised he was never able to get inside. He was transported to USA Medical Center for further treatment. Fire Investigators have determined that another male, a female and baby escaped the structure apparently unharmed. The fire appears to have originated in the kitchen area of the house and spread throughout the structure. The exterior of the structure next door also received some radiant heat damage from the fire. The cause remains under investigation at this time. Investigators are also awaiting autopsy report to determine exact cause of death. Engines 12, 14, 15, truck 10, rescue 14 and District Chief Ron Morgan responded to the fire. ###
