Sep 2nd, 2009

September 2, 2009 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (SH2009-55) FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION R. Steve Huffman Public Information Officer (251) 208-2857/Fax: (251) 208-2861 E-Mail: huffman@cityofmobile.org FIREFIGHTERS RESPOND TO MARINA FIRE A call was received by Mobile Fire-Rescue Department Dispatchers at approximately 1:12 a.m. Wednesday, September 2 reporting boats on fire at the Scenic Basin Yacht Club located at 3620 Scenic Drive at Club House Road. When firefighters arrived they reported two approximately 45 foot boats and part of the boat slips (dock) on fire. The mooring lines on one of the boats had burn through and causing it to drift across the basin, scorching the bows of two other boats. Both burning boats sank in the basin. Fire Investigators believe the fire started on the boat named “Katie’s Dream” and the fire spread from there. The roof over at least six of the boat slips burned and part of the slip walkways burned as well. Due to diesel fuel and oil spilling from the fuel tanks on board the boats, Mobile Fire-Rescue Departments Haz-Mat Team and the U.S. Coast Guard’s Strike Team were called to the scene to mitigate clean up. The cause of the fire remains under investigation primarily because the boat that investigators believe the fire started sank. Damage is estimated over $1 million. No injuries were reported. Engines 8, 9, 11, 15, 16, truck 10, 24, rescue 24, Haz-Mat 15, Fireboat 2 and District Chief John Young and the U.S Coast Guard Gulf Strike Team responded. ###
