June 21, 2011 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (SH2011-46) FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION R. Steve Huffman Public Information Officer (251) 208-2857/Fax: (251) 208-2861 E-Mail: huffman@cityofmobile.org FIRE IN VACANT HOUSE ON MARINE STREET Firefighters responded to the report of a fire in a vacant single story, wood frame structure Tuesday, June 21. A passerby reported the fire to firefighters at Station 11 at approximately 2:55 p.m. When firefighters arrived they reported heavy fire and smoke coming from the structure. Neighbors told Fire Investigators that the house had been abandoned for a number of years and the structure was found to be in disrepair. Neighbors also told investigators kids had been using fireworks in the area. The fire appears to have originated at the rear of the structure and spread throughout totaling the structure. Fire Investigators found evidence of fireworks in the area where the fire originated and believe that to be the cause. No injuries were reported. Fireworks are illegal in the City of Mobile and are dangerous especially in the current dry conditions. Anyone seeing someone using fireworks should report it to authorities. Engines 2, 3, 9; truck 4; rescue 3 and District Chief Alex Trenier responded. The Bureau of Fire Prevention is investigating the fire. ###
