February Firefighter of the Month

Feb 23rd, 2011

February 23, 2011 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (SH2011-27) FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION R. Steve Huffman Public Information Officer (251) 208-2857/Fax: (251) 208-2861 E-Mail: huffman@cityofmobile.org FEBRUARY FIREFIGHTER OF THE MONTH Mobile Firefighter-Driver Paula Pigorsch, a veteran with over 15 years with Mobile Fire-Rescue, was presented the Firefighter of the Month award for February this morning, February 23. Pigorsch was on her way home on the evening of December 20, 2010 when she spotted smoke in the area of Grand Oaks Drive. Upon further investigation she discovered a house with fire in the attic, which was breaking through the roof, which Theodore Volunteer Fire Department (TVFD) was working. Pigorsch stopped to offer any assistance and inquired as to who was inside and was told only two firefighters from TVFD, one being the Chief, Jerry Morgan. She acquired some firefighting gear, including an air pack and mask, from a female firefighter on the scene. She then proceeded inside and relieved one of the firefighters, whose air tank alarm was sounding due to low air. She then proceeded into the attic and assisted with extinguishment of the fire. Although it wasn’t her responsibly or in her working jurisdiction Paula showed true spirit of what it means to be a firefighter nonetheless by stopping and assisting fellow firefighters in their time of need; and for this she is deserving of recognition. The Firefighter of the Month is sponsored by the Pleasant Valley Opportunity Club. ###
