Mobile, Ala. — The Mobile Fire-Rescue Department (MFRD) is proud to announce that Fire Service Driver Derrick T. Johnson has been selected as the Firefighter of the Month for December.
Driver Johnson, a 24-year veteran of the department, was selected for this honor in recognition of his exceptional service and dedication to the community. He has served as a driver for more than 13 years.
“On the scene of emergencies, he is always paying attention to everything and thinking ahead as to what resources he may need or hazards that may present a threat,” Captain Samuel L. McLarty, his supervisor said. “His actions on the scene of numerous incidents over his career have saved many lives.”
His career began as a cadet at 19 after he finished high school. As a cadet he was able to get a peek into various aspects of the fire department and liked what he saw. He said one of the highlights of the job is showing up to help somebody and leaving them in a better condition than what they were in before.
“House fires, some you're able to actually save the little kid's toys,” Johnson said. “Family photos, just something that's that that was dear to them. It might not be much. They lost a building, but they still had memories of some of the stuff that they had.”
Stationed at Freeman Station 1, he is known for his dedication, professionalism, and commitment to serving the community. Johnson is also a rescue technician and hazmat technician and has served on the Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) team since its inception.
