The Mobile Fire-Rescue Department (MFRD) is proud to honor Fire Service Driver David L. Wilson as the Firefighter of the Month for October 2024.
Driver Wilson, a dedicated member of the MFRD since 2013, currently serves as a driver on Truck 24 and is a rescue technician. His commitment to public service extends beyond his official duties, as evidenced by a recent act of kindness.
When a young man approached the fire station seeking assistance with a damaged bicycle, Wilson went above and beyond to help. The bike was in poor condition, with a loose crank, no brakes, wheels that were out of true, and a malfunctioning seat. Recognizing the young man’s reliance on the bike for transportation to and from work, Wilson quickly took action.
“The best thing that I could do was get him on the road safely because he told us used this bike to get to work,” Wilson said. “He just pleaded that somebody would just help him get the crank back on.”
He gave the bike a complete overhaul and fixed all the issues.
Captain Joseph Bryan D’Angelo, Wilson’s supervisor, praised his dedication: “That’s just in David's DNA and he loves bicycles,” D’Angelo said. “When he sees his bike, he just went to town on it.”
By going the extra mile to assist a community member in need, Driver Wilson exemplifies the values of the Mobile Fire-Rescue Department. Wilson has also been awarded Meritorious Service Award – Operations and a Service Recognition Award.
