February 11, 2011 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (SH2011-23) FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION R. Steve Huffman Public Information Officer (251) 208-2857/Fax: (251) 208-2861 E-Mail: huffman@cityofmobile.org CIVILIAN AND FIREFIGHTER INJURED AT HOUSE FIRE Firefighters responded to a fire in a large, single-story, wood frame house, located at 1078 State Street, this morning, February 11. As firefighters were pulling out of the Central station in downtown Mobile, after receiving the call at approximately 7:54 a.m., they reported heavy smoke coming from the direction of the reported incident. Upon arrival they reported heavy smoke and fire coming from the roof of the structure on the corner of State and Kennedy Streets. They were told that all occupants had escaped but later found that one occupant had actually received injuries and was in a house next door. The male victim was apparently in the room where the fire originated and received 2nd degree buns to his right hand, forearm and a small spot on his shoulder. He also had smoke and heat inhalation injuries and was transported to USA Medical Center. A firefighter was also injured when he apparently twisted his knee. He was transported to Springhill Medical Center. The fire appears to have originated in a bedroom at the rear of the structure. The fire spread to the attic and through the roof, also damaging some adjacent rooms. There was smoke and heat damage throughout the entire structure. Damage is estimated at approximately $35 thousand. The cause of the fire is under investigation at this time because fire investigators haven’t been able to speak to the victim. Engines 3, 8, 14; truck 4; rescue 3, 14; District Chiefs John Young and Elbert Cross responded. The Bureau of Fire Prevention is conducting the investigation. ###
