November 14, 2006 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (SH2006-50) FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION R. Steve Huffman Public Information Officer (251) 208-5806/Fax: (251) 208-5813 E-Mail: huffman@cityofmobile.org Citizen Valor Award Presentation Mobile Fire-Rescue Chief Stephen Dean will be presenting a Citizen Valor Award to two Mobile Housing Board employees today at the Mobile City Council Meeting which begins at 10:30 a.m. On Friday, October 6, 2006 Mobile Fire-Rescue Department responded to the scene of an intentional fire located at 1215B Arlington Street.. The structure was a duplex apartment owned and operated by the Mobile Housing Board. The apartment was occupied by Lakeada N. Miller and her two-year old son, Michael D. Price. On the day of the event Ms. Miller was involved in a domestic situation with her soon-to-be ex boyfriend. The boyfriend allegedly pushed Ms. Miller out the kitchen door locking her out. He then proceeded to set a pile of clothes on fire in the middle of the kitchen floor at which time he fled, locking the door behind him with Ms. Miller’s infant son left inside. Ms. Miller alerted two Mobile Housing Board employees, Chris Samuel Matthews and Edward Anthony Rouse, who were working in the area nearby. Matthews and Rouse were able to kick open the metal door and without regard to their own safety, rescued the infant from the apartment that was filled with heavy smoke conditions. They then grabbed some nearby water hoses and were able to extinguish most of the fire prior to the arrival of Engine 11. For their brave actions we are pleased to present to them this Citizen Valor Award. ###
