Building Fire at Grady Buick/Mazda

Steve Huffman Public Information Officer (251) 208-5806/Fax: (251) 208-5813 E-Mail: huffman@cityofmobile.org BUILDING FIRE AT GRADY BUICK/MAZDA A passerby reported heavy smoke coming from the rear of Grady Buick/Mazda located at 3025 Government Boulevard, early Tuesday morning, September 19, 2006 at approximately 5:39 a.m. Mobile Firefighters arrived at approximately 5:44 a.m. and reported a building at the rear of the Mazda dealership fully involved with fire. Firefighters immediately called for a 2nd Alarm assignment to bring in additional personnel to help with extinguishing the fire. It took firefighters approximately 30-40 minutes to extinguish the flames that destroyed a one story concrete block with a metal roof building. The building was used as the detail shop to prepare cars sold for the potential owner. Also destroyed were 4 vehicles located within the building. Two additional vehicles parked outside in close proximity received heat damage to the front bumpers and head lights. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined but there was heavy lightning in the area due to a passing storm and that is being closely looked at as a possible cause and remains under investigation. Damage is estimated at approximately $500 thousand. No injuries were reported. 1st Alarm assignment Engines 19, 16, 23, truck 24, rescue 23 and District 2 Chief Johnny Morris. 2nd Alarm assignment Engines 12, 9, 8, truck 17 and District 3 Chief Alex Trenier. Also responding were Deputy Chiefs Charlie Parmar, Ricky Brannon, Doug Sims and Mark Hansberry and various other staff. ###
