Mobile, Ala. — On Thursday, December 12, officials from the City of Mobile will join other project partners to celebrate the completion of a multi-phase, $30 million project that has widened and significantly enhanced several miles of Zeigler Blvd. inside the city limits.
The city recently completed work on the 2nd Phase of the Zeigler Blvd. Widening Project — a $24 million effort that expanded the roadway from two lanes to five between Athey Road and Forest Hill Drive. The project also included several other enhancements along this section of Zeigler Blvd., like additional turning lanes, dedicated bicycle lanes, new sidewalks, improved curb and gutter features, drainage improvements, utility upgrades and new traffic signals at key intersections.
There will be a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 12, in front of Langan Park. Parking will be available at the park via Ludlow Circle. City of Mobile officials and partners will be available for interviews after the ceremony to discuss this major infrastructure project.
Background on the Zeigler Blvd. Widening Project:
Construction on this multi-phase project began in 2019. It has widened and substantially improved more than four miles of Zeigler Blvd. between Forest Hill Drive and Schillinger Road — adding new vehicle lanes, dedicated turning lanes, new traffic signals and other roadway and infrastructure improvements. A connecting corridor for neighborhoods, businesses, parks and other public amenities, Zeigler Blvd. also received new features to accommodate cyclists and pedestrians.
The Zeigler Blvd. Widening Project represents a more than $30 million investment into one of Mobile’s most highly trafficked corridors. It has helped alleviate traffic congestion and improve accessibility and safety for pedestrians and cyclists. Both phases of the project were supported by a combination of federal, state and local dollars, including federal transportation funds received through the Mobile Metropolitan Planning Organization. Local funds were contributed by the City of Mobile and Mobile County through its Pay-As-You-Go Transportation Improvement Program.
