Mobile City Council to vote on Civic Center demolition July 30
Mobile, Ala. — Today, the City of Mobile released a “sneak peek” at the latest renderings of a state-of-the-art arena slated to be built on the Mobile Civic Center property. Those renderings are available on the city's website at https://www.cityofmobile.org/mobile-new-arena/
Next week, the Mobile City Council will vote on several items related to the future of the Mobile Civic Center, including a contract to demolish the 60-year-old arena, theater and Expo Hall. The council will also consider amending the design contract with Goodwyn, Mills and Cawood so that 100 percent of the site plans can be designed. That work will include the complete plans for a new, multi-use entertainment arena and the groundwork for the future development of the entire property.
“We have worked diligently with our partners to ensure the planning and design phases of this project stay on time and on budget,” said Mayor Sandy Stimpson. “As we get closer to the proposed demolition, we want to celebrate the Mobile Civic Center's history while embracing the future. Demolition will be the first step toward building an incredible new facility that will allow future generations of Mobilians to make new lasting memories with their friends, families and fellow community members.”
Per its rules, the Mobile City Council holds new items on its agenda for one week before voting. The council is expected to vote on the demolition contract during its July 30 meeting.
