City taps grant partnership to offer free recycling bins to Mobilians
Mobile, Ala. — To make it easier for more Mobilians to reduce, reuse, and recycle, the City of Mobile is offering free take-home bins to residents who use its single-stream recycling services.
These 18-gallon bins are available to City of Mobile residents and can be requested at any of the city’s three recycling drop-off centers, located on Museum Drive, Pinehill Drive, and Dauphin Island Parkway. The bins provide residents with a convenient way to sort, collect, and transport recyclable materials to the nearest single-stream recycling center. Beginning Monday, March 24, these free 18-gallon bins will be available to interested Mobilians on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.
This effort is funded through a grant from The Recycling Partnership, with support from the American Beverage Association’s “Every Bottle Back” initiative and the Alabama Beverage Association. Along with support from ADEM’s Alabama Recycling Fund, this grant helped fund the construction and operation of the Dauphin Island Parkway Recycling Center, which opened in April 2024.
“Whether you’re an experienced recycler or just getting started, we’re excited to help make recycling in the City of Mobile a little easier,” Mayor Sandy Stimpson said. “Our Office of Resilience and Sustainability has done so much to expand recycling services across the city, and with support from The Recycling Partnership and its funding partners, we are excited to continue that growth.”
Residents can do their part by only bringing their recyclable materials to any of the City of Mobile’s three drop-off locations. Accepted items include:
- Aluminum and steel cans
- Food and beverage cartons
- Paper products, including newspapers and flattened cardboard
- Empty plastic bottles and containers
Please note that glass items are NOT ACCEPTED at the City of Mobile’s recycling facilities. For more information on the city’s recycling services and rules, visit cityofmobile.org/services/recycling/.
