Mobile, Ala. — The City of Mobile will host a dedication ceremony for Lafayette Heights Park at 8:15 a.m. on Thursday, August 15, to commemorate several improvements made to the park in recent years.

Lafayette Heights Park's dedication will include the unveiling of a new iron archway identifying the park as a central part of the historic Lafayette Heights neighborhood. This community-driven effort is one of many improvements to this pocket park that the City of Mobile has made in recent years.

Late City Councilman Levon C. Manzie championed a previous CIP project that invested nearly $200,000 to add a walking trail, benches, trash receptacles and other amenities to the area. The project also included an overhaul of the park’s landscaping designed by the late landscape architect Terry C. Plauche.

Over the last year, members of the community, led by Mrs. Mary Stevenson, have worked with City Councilman William Carroll and Mayor Stimpson’s office to add signage and an iron archway that properly recognize the park as the gateway to the Lafayette Heights Historic District.

Members of the media are invited to cover the dedication and learn more about the history of this unique pocket park and the recent improvements the City of Mobile has made there.
