Mobile, Ala. — The next public input meeting on the design of the Africatown Welcome Center will be at 6 p.m. on Monday, July 31, at the Robert Hope Community Center (850 Edwards Street).
Since March, the City of Mobile has been working directly with community members in Africatown and other stakeholders to develop a design for this important community facility. Once completed, the Africatown Welcome Center will be one of the earliest stops for visitors coming to the Mobile area to experience the unique story of Africatown firsthand. The Welcome Center will help welcome visitors to the community and connect them to other great experiences in Africatown. It will also serve as a space for the community to host gatherings, exhibitions, meetings and other kinds of events.
Based on previous feedback from the Africatown community, a tentative floor plan, a parking layout and potential building renderings will be showcased at the upcoming meeting on July 31. The City of Mobile’s design team, which is being led by Mott McDonald, will also be going through various options for finishing materials, colors, lighting, and many other aspects of the building.
Anyone who wants to help shape the design of this future City of Mobile facility is invited to attend the meeting on July 31. If you have questions, email africatownwelcomecenter@cityofmobile.org. You can also sign up for mobile notifications by texting MOBILEAFRICATOWNWC to 91896.
