Councilman Joel Daves Elected Chairman of Alabama State Council on the Arts

Councilman Joel Daves has been elected Chairman of the Alabama State Council on the Arts (ASCA), which serves as the official state arts agency of Alabama. He will serve a two-year term through 2019.
Councilman Daves has long been active in arts organizations across the state having served as a past board member of the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, the Mobile Museum of Art, the Montgomery Symphony, the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce, the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra, the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber of Commerce, the Alabama Symphony, the Virginia Samford Theatre and Vulcan Park.
The Council, whose members are appointed by the Governor for six-year terms, helps promote the arts statewide and makes important decisions on grants that support art programs and arts education throughout the state.
During his time on the ASCA’s Council, Councilman Daves has served in various capacities including as Vice Chairman, Secretary and Chairman of the Long Range Planning Committee.
The Council receives its support through an annual appropriation from the Alabama Legislature and funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.
