Budget Vote Expected on October 10th

The City Council has voted to hold over the proposed 2018 Fiscal Year Budget until their next meeting on Tuesday, October 10th. The additional time will allow the Council and Administration to collaborate on the remaining outstanding budget items they have been discussing for the past month.
Since receiving the proposed budget, the Council has held a public hearing, three Finance Committee meetings and discussed the budget and councilmembers’ specific concerns at numerous regular council and pre council meetings. The handful of items still being discussed include longevity raises for members of the Mobile Fire Department and onetime bonuses for city workers and all retirees.
“I greatly appreciate the Mayor has agreed to ensure members of the department will receive their longevity raises in the 2018 Fiscal Year,” said Councilwoman Bess Rich. “I’m very hopeful that over the next two weeks he will follow through by inserting it into the actual budget.”
At this morning’s meeting, Councilman Levon Manzie again discussed the possibility of using funds allocated to Gulfquest for a one-time bonus for city workers while Councilman John Williams continues to seek the Administration’s assistance in identifying funds for the onetime bonus for all retirees.
Until that vote, the city will operate normally under the 2017 Fiscal Year Budget. Councilman Joel Daves voted against holding the budget over.
