2018 CIP: Next Round of Major Infrastructure Projects Proposed

This afternoon, the City Council’s Finance Committee gave a favorable report to the proposed 2018 Capital Improvement Plan (CIP). After today’s vote on the $21 million worth of infrastructure projects throughout the city, it will move to a vote by the full council in the coming weeks.
“This is the culmination of months and months of work. Most of us have been working on this since we approved last year’s plans,” said Council President Gina Gregory. “The projects already completed, underway and on the way make Mobile a better place to live and our city more attractive to families and businesses looking for a place to call home.”
Each member of the City Council worked closely with key city staff to review the status of projects undertaken during the current fiscal year and identify the highest priority projects to take on during the coming year in each of our districts.
The proposed projects for the 2018 CIP include:
Road Projects - $5,071,000
Sidewalk Projects - $1,115,000
Park & Recreation Center Projects - $6,226,000
Drainage Projects - $4,106,000
Citywide Facility Projects - $ 1,884,001
Greenway Initiative - $490,000
Bike & Pedestrian Safety Projects - $60,000
“This infrastructure program is payed for with the extra penny in the sales tax approved by the Council in 2014 and reflects our efforts to ensure the city is run as efficiently as possible,” said Finance Committee Chair Joel Daves. “A strong financial footing is essential to moving Mobile forward.”
The 2018 CIP will be the third year of projects funded through the valuable funds made possible by the Council’s extension of the penny sales tax.
