A Messagefrom Mayor Stimpson - May 1

May 1st, 2020

Good evening,

It is 8:30 p.m. on Friday, May 1 and I am writing to give you an update on the City of Mobile's efforts regarding COVID-19.

As of tonight, there are 1,099 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Mobile County, out of 8,017 total tests. There are 61 deaths attributed to the virus.

What a week! We closed out the week strong by introducing a new plan to help our small businesses who are suffering as a result of the pandemic.

Our "Ignite Mobile" plan will direct much-needed grants and other support to businesses forced to close under the state's "Safer at Home" plan which runs through May 15. Specifically, we've heard from a number of "close contact" businesses such as barber shops, beauty salons and fitness centers that have been unable to open and unable to receive state or federal assistance.

Today we shared the plan with the Mobile City Council during a special, called meeting that ended late this afternoon. Hopefully we are answering all of their questions and we can get this package approved as soon as possible.

Details of the plan, including a list of eligible businesses, are available on the city's web site at www.cityofmobile.org.

I'm going to keep it short tonight after such a momentous week. Thank you so much for continuing to read and for your wonderful words of support.

The forecast calls for a perfect weather weekend, and I hope you will take advantage of the opportunity to get some fresh air and enjoy time with your loved ones. That is certainly my plan!

Sincerely,

Mayor Sandy Stimpson
