A Message from Mayor Stimpson - September 30
Sep 30th, 2020
Good evening,
It is 8:30 p.m. on September 30, and I am writing to give you an update from the City of Mobile.
Today, the Mobile County Health Department reports 13,697 COVID-19 cases, an increase of 61 cases. To review the detailed report, click here.
In a press conference this morning, Gov. Kay Ivey extended Alabama's Safer at Home order including a statewide face covering requirement in public spaces. The city of Mobile does not have plans to implement any new directives related to COVID-19 outside of the current state guidelines. We will continue to monitor COVID-19 numbers closely along with our partners at the Mobile County Commission and Mobile County Health Department.
With an increase in evictions on the rise due to the economic toll of COVID-19, the city of Mobile is doing what it can to support low income families in need. Through integral partnerships with non-profit agencies, the city has already committed more than $1.8 million of funding from the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act toward helping those who are facing eviction or have been evicted as a result of COVID-19.
An allocation of more than $1.5 million will help support Legal Services of Alabama, whose staff is representing Mobilians facing eviction in court and helping to rehouse others who've already been evicted. Throughout the pandemic, there has also been an uptick in incidents of domestic violence. In response, the city has made another $300,000 available to Penelope House as it works to find secure housing for victims fleeing violence at home.
Also today, our team continued to make progress on collecting debris from Hurricane Sally. So far, we have collected 29% of the estimated 381,360 cubic yards of trash and debris. Remember to contact 311 if you won't be able to get your debris out to the curb before Oct. 5th.
Today I am reminded that the City has many purposes in serving the citizens of Mobile. Our team is most often focused on solving problems and improving the lives of our citizens based on our known challenges. However, sometimes our purpose is to quickly turn to our resources, relationships, and talents to find solutions that solve emerging and unexpected challenges. These last several months have certainly been a test in readiness and responsiveness. We remain steadfastly dedicated to finding innovative solutions for all of our citizens. By now, I hope you are confident that no matter what tomorrow brings, together we can meet the challenge.
Sleep tight!
