A Message from Mayor Stimpson - September 29

Good evening,

It is 9:00 p.m. on September 29, and I am writing to give you an update from the City of Mobile.

Today, the Mobile County Health Department reports 13,545 COVID-19 cases, an increase of 51 cases. To review the detailed report, click here.

Work on the Broad Street Improvement Project is continuing to progress nicely despite some damage sustained during Hurricane Sally.

As this work continues, the intersection of North Broad Street, Springhill Avenue and St. Louis Street will remain closed while crews work to relocate utilities, improve drainage infrastructure and prepare to begin creating a new roadway.

The road work between Lawrence and State Streets is anticipated to be completed in November.

The initial funding for this rebuild was a $14 million Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation. We have also added additional funds committed by the City of Mobile and the state.

Once completed, these improvements on Broad Street will help connect important industrial areas like the Brookley Aeroplex and Alabama's State Docks to downtown Mobile using landscaping to create an attractive, welcoming transportation corridor through the heart of Downtown Mobile.

When thinking about the TIGER grant, I'm reminded that it took our team three tries before finally receiving this award. It was the first large federal grant we received under my administration, and it took a great deal of perseverance to finally find the key to success. That key was to create an infrastructure project that would connect our citizens to jobs. Now we are finally seeing this project come to fruition at a time when we are poised to move commercial flights to our downtown airport at Brookley. The future is bright.

Sleep tight!
