A Message from Mayor Stimpson - September 18
Sep 18th, 2020
Good evening,
It is almost 9:00 p.m. on September 18, and I am writing to give you an update from the City of Mobile.
Tonight's curfew will begin at 9:30 p.m. and will end at 6 a.m. A copy of the new curfew order can be found on the City of Mobile's website.
Today I had the opportunity to join Governor Ivey, Senator Doug Jones, Mayor Jeff Collier, Mayor Terry Downey, County Commissioner Jerry Carl, Sheriff Sam Cochran, the Mobile legislative delegation, and several other representatives in a roundtable discussion about Hurricane Sally relief, followed by a press conference. The open lines of communication between all of your elected officials is unprecedented. Our entire region will be better served in these response efforts because we are all stronger together.
AL Power had reduced our power outages in the City of Mobile from 165,000 without power to just 21,000 as of close of business today. They are making great progress, and we are hopeful to have everyone's power restored in short order.
Also, don't forget that debris collection and removal will begin on Monday September 21, 2020. Residents are asked to separate disaster debris into three piles.
- Vegetation
- Construction and Debris
- Appliances, Electronics, Tires
Additionally, our public works teams have been working hard to clear thoroughfares and mitigate hazards. By the end of today, our team had cleared 202 hazard locations. There are just 40 reported non-electrical tree hazards and 21 reported electrical hazards left to clear. This is a huge job and the dedication of this team cannot be understated. Under the leadership of our Municipal Arborist, Peter Toler, the team has worked tirelessly to restore our roadways and ensure your safety.
Like Peter Toler, most of you reading this are leaders and others are expecting you to lead them to victory, success or maybe even safety. According to John Maxwell, "leaders who practice the Law of Victory believe that anything less than success is unacceptable. And, they have no Plan B. That keeps them fighting." During periods of crisis such as hurricanes and the aftermath of hurricanes, there are countless leadership situations. They all contain a key to victory. As a leader, whether it be for your family, your work group or your business, others are expecting you to find the key and turn it. Good luck to each and every one of you as you work your way through the coming weeks of recovery.
It's been a long week. Sleep tight! And God Bless!
