A Message from Mayor Stimpson - September 17

Good evening,
It is 8:45 p.m. on September 17, and I am writing to give you an update from the City of Mobile.
Tonight's curfew will begin at 9 p.m. and will end at 6 a.m. A copy of the new curfew order can be found on the City of Mobile's website.
Today I visited one of Alabama Power's staging sites. The power company has expressed to me that this is an unprecedented outage for Mobile and they are mounting an unprecedented response. There are currently 1,850 power workers in the Mobile area today. By tomorrow night, that number will grow to 3,000. We expect significant progress in power restoration by end of weekend.
The City of Mobile will begin debris collection and removal on Monday September 21, 2020. Residents are asked to separate disaster debris into three piles:
Construction and demolition
Trees, limbs, and brush
Household hazardous waste
Please place the debris piles at the curb in the public right-of-way in front of your home. Note that if you place vegetation in black trash bags, it should be placed with construction and demolition and NOT with other trees, limbs, and brush. If properly separated, it will be picked up by crews and disposed of accordingly. For those with multiple piles, it should also be noted that it may require multiple trips to pick up all of your debris piles. There is no limit to the amount of debris and no cost for City residents.
In addition to debris collection and removal from homes, we are also working diligently to clear fallen trees and downed powerlines from the rights of way. In order to help you see this progress in real time, we have created a real time map for citizens to view areas that have been deemed "damaged sites" due to fallen trees and downed powerlines. Black incident markers indicating "hazard mitigated" mean this incident has been cleared for safety. Some debris may still be awaiting pickup, but the street is passible and power lines are secured. Other colors indicate an incident that is still in progress. The map can be viewed by clicking here.
The real time information is being updated throughout the day. If you see an area that has fallen trees and downed powerlines and is not listed on the map, please contact 311. Currently the map can be viewed by any computer, Andriod, iPad, or tablet. iPhones are not supported at this time.
In closing, I want to thank all of our first responders. MFRD and MPD are working tirelessly to keep you safe. MPD responded to nearly 2,500 calls for service since Monday evening. MFRD responded to 300 incidents including multiple structure fires and rescue situations. These men and women are truly our heroes.
