A Message from Mayor Stimpson - September 16
Sep 16th, 2020
Good evening,
It is 9:55 p.m. on September 16, and I am writing to give you an update from the City of Mobile.
As predicted, Hurricane Sally like all hurricanes, was unpredictable. We expected a 7 a.m. landfall, but by 4:45 a.m. she had made her presence known causing damage all along Alabama's Gulf Coast. She made landfall in Baldwin County. Our thoughts and prayers continue to go out to all of our neighbors to the east.
We are still assessing the damage in our City. Preliminary assessments show more than 100 trees are down and more than 160,000 homes are without power in the County. Alabama Power is working diligently to restore power, but with the vast amount of damage they are asking for your patience as they evaluate and complete repairs.
MPD and MFRD answered more than 400 calls last night. At one time all of our fire rescue units were out assisting our citizens. Their dedication to service and professionalism last night saved the lives of those in overturned vehicles, those trapped in homes and so many more.
This morning and this afternoon Commissioner Ludgood, Mike Evans (from EMA) and I held press conferences to update you on the status of storm damage and recovery. At that time, I announced a curfew beginning at 7 p.m. and ending at 6 a.m. For your safety and the safety of our first responders, we ask that you remain at home. To read the order, visit our website at www.cityofmobile.org. Also, for anyone in Mobile County experiencing home/roof damage who may need a tarp please contact 211.
I am always inspired by the countless number of Mobilians stepping up to help their neighbors. We are always stronger working together. Hurricane Sally may have had a degree of uncertainty, but what is certain is how we respond as a community during challenging times. Tomorrow, I hope you will reach out to someone who may need something you have. Your outreach may forever change their life.
Good night. God Bless!
