A Message from Mayor Stimpson - September 14
Sep 14th, 2020
Good evening,
It is 8:45 p.m. on September 14, 2020 and I am writing to give you an update from the City of Mobile.
Today, the Mobile County Health Department reports 12,909 COVID-19 cases, an increase of 32 cases. To review the detailed report, click here.
At 2:30 p.m. today, I participated in a joint City/County press conference with Commissioner Ludgood and Mike Evans from EMA to provide updates related to Hurricane Sally. You can access the livestream on the City of Mobile Facebook page.
This morning we ordered City of Mobile operations to close with the exception of emergency personnel in response to Hurricane Sally. The City has designated the Alert status mobilization period for the storm as of 8 a.m. Tuesday, September 15, 2020 to Wednesday, September 16, 2020 at 11:59 p.m. We are encouraging citizens to be prepared for the worst-case scenario, which is a direct hit.
This storm is expected to create a very high storm surge in our area. Our team is coordinating with MFRD and MPD to deploy barricades at street locations known to have flood problems. Drivers should stay alert and not try to drive through standing or moving water. I encourage you to stay home unless absolutely necessary and if you live in low-lying areas in the City of Mobile that are prone to flooding or in danger of being cut off to the roadways due to flooding, seek higher ground proactively. You can find shelter information by visiting Mobile County EMA. Be mindful that shelters will be limited in capacity due to COVID-19 restrictions, so we are encouraging citizens to stay with family and friends when possible.
There will be no garbage or trash collection on Tuesday, September 15, 2020 and Wednesday, September 16, 2020. Make up for garbage will be Saturday for missed routes on Tuesday and Monday for missed Wednesday routes. Trash Department will not be working on September 15th or September 16 and no specific makeup day is designated. Recycling will not be open for Tuesday or Wednesday. Please bear with us as we catch work through the storm delays.
When historians write about the history of Mobile in 2020, it will be about how we have responded to all the many challenges of this year. I'm quite confident that we will rise to the occasion of Hurricane Sally, just as we have for past storms. Be sure to stay safe, and encourage your family, friends, and neighbors to do the same.
Goodnight!
