A Message from Mayor Stimpson - October 30
Oct 30th, 2020
Good evening,
It is 7:15 p.m. on Friday, October 30th, and I am writing to give you an update from the City of Mobile. Today, the Mobile County Health Department reports 17,269 COVID-19 cases, an increase of 42 cases. To read a detailed report, click here.
To avoid the need for another overnight curfew, the City of Mobile has been installing generators at remaining major intersections without power throughout the day. We're hopeful that by retrofitting the signals at some of our highly trafficked intersections, we can avoid the need for curfews after future storms. I'd like to thank Mobilians for their patience as we continue to recover from Hurricane Zeta.
Moving forward, we will also be adjusting our strategy and operating procedures for collecting debris from Zeta and the remaining debris from Hurricane Sally. Our goal is to provide faster and more thorough debris removal by following our normal trash pickup schedule. This should also give citizens a better idea of when they can expect trash to be removed so they can be prepared.
As was the case with Sally, we are asking citizens to help us by separating debris from Zeta in separate piles for vegetation and construction debris. Based on our current timeline, we hope to have the city cleared by Thanksgiving. We are also continuing to accept bagged vegetation at Langan Municipal Park and the James Seals Community Center every day from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Heading into the weekend, I'd like to give one last reminder about our family-friendly Halloween event. From 10 a.m. to Noon on Saturday, Oct. 31, the City of Mobile, along with more than 25 organizations, will be hosting a "Reverse Trunk or Treat" in Langan Municipal Park located at 4901 Zeigler Blvd.
This free, drive-thru event will give parents and children a safe way to celebrate Halloween while still maintaining social distancing. If your family wants to participate, simply show up with your children, drive slowly through the park, and members of our team will be there to bring the treats right to your car!
Also this Sunday, don't forget to set your clocks back one hour as we "Fall Back" together.
In Jerimiah 29:11, God says "I have good plans for you, not plans to hurt you." In his book of daily devotionals, Max Lucado focuses on that verse when discussing a lesson that's become quite popular in children's ministries over the years. "Every day God prepares for us a plate of experiences," he writes.
"Some days are three-cookie days, but many are not. Sometimes our plate has nothing but vegetables - twenty-four hours of celery, carrots, and squash. Apparently, God knows we need some strength, and though the portion may be hard to swallow, isn't it for our own good? Most days, however, have a bit of it all. The next time your plate has more broccoli than apple pie, remember who prepared the meal."
Over the past few days, we've had some "nothing but vegetable" days in Mobile. The storm and its aftermath have no doubt challenged us all, but I would challenge you to remember that there are more "three cookie" days ahead... and the next time your plate has a portion you find hard to swallow, talk to God about it.
Sleep tight,
