A Message from Mayor Stimpson - October 22
Oct 22nd, 2020
Good evening,
It is 9 p.m. on Thursday, October 22, and I am writing to give you an update from the City of Mobile.
Today, the Mobile County Health Department reports 14,509 COVID-19 cases, an increase of 68 cases. To review the detailed report, click here.
To date, crews on the ground have collected 399,335 cubic yards of debris from Hurricane Sally during our first pass through the City. If you have debris that has not been collected, please make sure to have it at the roadside before our second pass begins on Monday, October 26. You can also drop off bagged yard debris at James Seals Community Center and Langan Municipal Park any day from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
As we approach the Nov. 3 election, I'd like to remind you the Mobile Police Department will be temporarily closing the fire lane on eastbound Government Street in front of the Mobile County Probate Court Annex to allow motorists to drop off voters casting in-person absentee ballots. The fire lane will remain closed during operating hours until the deadline for in-person absentee voting on October 29. An MPD officer will be on scene to keep the fire lane clear and direct traffic.
Two weeks ago, we saw a great turnout for our first "Streets Alive" event in downtown Mobile, and we'll be doing the same thing this Friday evening and every Friday that doesn't fall on LODA Art Walk. As a reminder, Dauphin Street will be closed from Royal Street to Dearborn Street between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. The reduction in traffic allows more restaurants to offer outside dining while still maintaining social distancing practices. It also helps create an entertainment-friendly atmosphere for pedestrians.
Every day we are all faced with countless choices with some being mundane and others possibly being life changing. Making wise choices or possibly the wisest choice sure can make a difference. While tens of thousands of writings contain messages about seeking wisdom and making choices, a couple of sentences to remember are: "True wisdom goes beyond amassing knowledge; it applies knowledge in a life changing way. Intelligence or experienced people are not necessarily wise. Wisdom comes from allowing what God teaches to guide us."
I hope you will join me in praying for heavenly wisdom as we seek the correct pathways of solving the challenges facing our families, friends and city.
Sleep tight,
