A Message from Mayor Stimpson - October 2
Oct 2nd, 2020
Good evening,
It is 8 p.m. on October 2, and I am writing to give you an update from the City of Mobile.
Today, the Mobile County Health Department reports 13, 680 COVID-19 cases, an increase of 29 cases. To review the detailed report, click here.
Over the weekend, our teams will continue collecting debris from Hurricane Sally. As of 5 p.m., we have collected more than 36% of the estimated 381,360 cubic yards of trash and debris throughout the City.
You can help speed up this cleanup effort by separating trash into three piles: one for vegetation, another for construction debris and plastic bags and a third for electronics, appliances, tires, etc. Please remember it is illegal to blow leaves and grass cuttings into the street because it clogs our storm drainage system.
We expect to complete our first pass of debris clean up by the week of October 18 through 23. At that point, we will go back through the city to make a second pass for those residents who were unable to get debris out before our crews were able to clear their streets.
Please remember that Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue East of N. Broad Street will be closed Monday Oct. 5 through Friday, Oct. 8, in order to install drainage upgrades as part of the city's Broad Street Improvement Project. While this section Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue remains closed, Lawrence Street and Congress Street will be used as detours for motorists.
This evening I would also like to take a moment to commend a member of our team who has been making waves both locally and nationally. Damon Dash, who is the General Manager of the Wave Transit System, was named one of Mass Transit Magazine's "40 Under 40" in August.
During his time leading the City's public transportation system, Dash has overseen a number of improvements to the rider experience and established a direct service to the Mobile Regional Airport.
Mobile's successes are never the result of one person. We are all working together, each of us playing our role to move the ship forward. Our team members, like Damon, are faithfully working each day to improve Mobile. This goes well beyond city government. Many of you are doing your part to improve our City too. We all have a responsibility to devote ourselves to the job before us. Together, we are creating the momentum that propels the ship of Mobile forward.
Sincerely,
Mayor Sandy Stimpson
