A Message from Mayor Stimpson - October 1

Oct 1st, 2020

Posted in: MayorCOVID-19

Good evening,

It is 9:00 p.m. on October 1, and I am writing to give you an update from the City of Mobile.

Today, the Mobile County Health Department reports 13,658 COVID-19 cases, an increase of 71 cases. To review the detailed report, click here.

Our teams on the ground are continuing to make good progress collecting debris left over from Hurricane Sally. As of 5 p.m. today, we have collected more than 32% of the estimated 381,360 cubic yards of trash and debris throughout the City. Remember to contact 311 if you won't be able to get your debris out to the curb before Oct. 5th.

Beginning Friday Oct. 2, the City will be launching "Streets Alive" - this event will help create an entertainment friendly environment for Mobilians and visitors as they support downtown businesses. From 6 p.m. to 10 p.m Friday evenings, Dauphin Street will be closed from Royal Street to Dearborn Street. The reduction in traffic will allow restaurants more space to offer outdoor dining and retail stores and vendors additional space to showcase their wares while practicing social distancing.

As we continue to safely return to some of our normal activities, the City's Parks and Recreation Department will be continuing its Movies in the Park series with a screening of "Toy Story 4" at Dog River Park on Friday, Oct. 9. These events are free, family friendly and also allow space for safe social distancing. Your family can reserve a spot today at mprd.recdesk.com

I'll close tonight by telling you that it was 50-plus years ago when a wise person suggested that I read a chapter of Proverbs every day. For many years I did so and highlighted various verses and corresponding footnotes. One such verse was, Discretion will protect you and understanding will guard you. (Pv 2:11). The footnote reads: "Discretion is the ability to tell right from wrong. It enables the believer to detect evil motives in men and women. With practice it helps us evaluate courses of action and consequences. For some it is a gift, for most it is developed by using God's truth to make wise choices day by day."

One of my prayers is that God will give you and me a heightened sense of discretion during these challenging times. Would you agree that the wiser our choices, the better our lives and the better our City will be?

Sleep tight!
